Ayurvedic Remedies For Sudden Shortness Of Breathing Due To Acid Reflux, Expert Explains

Ayurveda is India’s traditional medical system, and has a variety of natural therapies that may help relieve acid reflux symptoms, such as abrupt shortness of breath. It’s important to note that these cures are meant to supplement, not replace, expert medical guidance. If you are experiencing chronic or severe symptoms, see a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Here are some Ayurvedic therapies that could bring relief:

You Need To Modify Your Lifestyle

Follow a Pitta-pacifying diet, avoiding spicy, acidic, and fried foods. Opt for cooling foods like cucumber, coconut, and mint. “Eat smaller, more frequent meals rather than large, heavy meals. Allow at least 2-3 hours between your last meal and bedtime. Stay well-hydrated with room temperature or lukewarm water. Avoid consuming excessive cold or iced beverages,” said Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar.

Herbal Remedies

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera juice is known for its cooling properties and may help soothe the digestive tract. Consume a small amount before meals.

Licorice (Mulethi)

“Licorice has mucus-forming properties that can help protect the oesophagus. Use deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) supplements or drink licorice tea,” said Dr Chaudhary.

Digestive Aids

Incorporate fresh ginger into your diet or drink ginger tea. It has anti-inflammatory properties and may help with digestion. Chew fennel seeds after meals to aid digestion and reduce acidity.

Ayurvedic Formulations

Triphala Churna

Triphala, a combination of three fruits, is known for its digestive benefits. Take a small amount with warm water before bedtime.

Avipattikar Churna

This Ayurvedic formulation may help balance acidity. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for the appropriate dosage.

Yoga and Breathing Exercises

Practise gentle pranayama (breathing exercises) such as deep belly breathing or Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) to promote relaxation.

Ayurvedic Massage (Abhyanga)

Regular abhyanga with cooling oils like coconut or sesame oil can help balance Pitta dosha and promote overall well-being.

Mindful Eating

Eat in a calm and relaxed environment. Chew food thoroughly and savour each bite mindfully.
