Liposuction, a popular cosmetic procedure, is a ray of hope for many struggling to achieve their dream body. Yet, it is often surrounded by misconceptions. These misconceptions hold people back from reaping the actual benefits of the liposuction procedure, which can transform bodies and, hence, transform lives.
Common Liposuction Myths Busted
We spoke to our expert, Dr Rajat Gupta, Delhi-based board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of RG Aesthetics as he busted the common liposuction myths. Here is what he shared with us. Let us find out the facts about liposuction.
Myth 1: Liposuction is a Weight-Loss Alternative
Contrary to commonly held beliefs, liposuction is not an effective method for weight loss. It’s designed for body contouring, targeting stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Ideal candidates are those near who have their ideal body weight, do not see a lot of weight fluctuation, and are seeking to refine their silhouette. The amount of weight loss from the body after the liposuction procedure will be proportionate to the amount of fat removed. Not more than that.
Myth 2: Liposuction Results are Temporary
Many believe that the fat removed by liposuction can quickly return. In reality, the fat cells removed are gone permanently. However, maintaining results requires a healthy lifestyle. Weight gain post-procedure can lead to fat accumulation in other areas of the body or expansion of the remaining fat cells. However, the fat cells that are removed are removed permanently.
Myth 3: Liposuction is Exclusively for Women
Liposuction is often associated with female cosmetic procedures. However, it’s increasingly popular among men for addressing areas like the abdomen and flanks, giving a flat abdomen and a contoured ‘V’ shaped body, offering significant benefits regardless of gender. Many men have benefitted from liposuction as it aids Gynecomastia surgery (man boob removal) too.
Myth 4: Liposuction is Painful and Dangerous
Modern liposuction techniques have evolved significantly. When performed by a qualified surgeon, it’s a safe procedure with manageable discomfort. We prioritise patient safety and employ advanced techniques to ensure a smooth recovery. In fact, as a certified trainer of modern techniques like Vaser, microaire and BodyTite, I personally trained many upcoming surgeons on some of the modern, scientific and safe liposuction tools.
Myth 5: All Surgeons Provide Similar Results
The outcome of liposuction heavily depends on the surgeon’s skill and experience. Choosing a reputable, experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon is important for achieving desired results and minimising risks. Experience and reviews of the surgeon also matter the most. Before selecting a surgeon, research and understand the surgeon’s skill and specialisation to visualise the results they can produce.
Liposuction, when understood and approached correctly, can be a transformative procedure. It’s essential for potential patients to seek accurate information and consult with experienced and certified plastic surgeons to ensure the best possible outcomes. Do not just believe the myths; explore, research and find the truths to make a decision and be the best version of yourself.
