Director Chad Stahelski is known for his work on the John Wick series, but he’s also a big fan of Star Wars and would leap at the chance of making an entry in that series some day. Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stahelski said he has some ideas for a Star Wars project, but he wondered if he might be the right fit for the traditionally more family friendly Disney.
“I’m a Star Wars guy,” Stahelski said (via IGN). “The first Star Wars changed my life path. Maybe someday out there, Disney if you’re listening, hit me in a couple of years. I have a couple of takes for Star Wars. I’d take a swing at that, see if Disney could survive me.”
Stahelski went on to say that “of course” he’s interested in making non-John Wick movies. However, one of the challenges with working on someone else’s franchise is creating things inside parameters set by the people who own and control the franchise. One can only imagine the guidelines and parameters that might be in place for the Star Wars series.
Stahelski estimated that the John Wick 4 was about 96% or 97% the film he wanted to make. He might not get this level of control in a different franchise, like Star Wars.
“Why work within somebody else’s parameters of what I feel to be a duel or mythology when I can create?” he said.
That said, it sounds like Stahelski wants to take a stab at a different franchise one day to test himself. “I still have a little bit of a competitor mindset left in me. I’m going ‘no that’s cool and I’m very flattered and I’m very honored’, but at the same time I want to take a swing. It’s like Rocky. I gotta know,” he said.
A Star Wars movie directed by Chad Stahelski might be an exciting prospect for fans, but no one should hold their breath for it to happen soon, if it ever does. Lucasfilm has a number of Star Wars movies in the works right now, and the next release could be a film from Oscar-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy that brings back Daisy Ridley as Rey.
As for the John Wick series, John Wick 5 is happening, but it’s still early days.
